I came to my info from two different directions. First of all, I am a descendent of Walter Locker, son of Thomas Locker. Walter and wife, Mary Barden Locker were the parents of nine children. One was Mary Locker who married John Hawkins I. They are my 3rd great grandparents. Hence Walter and Mary are my 4th geat grandparents.
Secondly, I have 6 first cousins who are McClures They are descendants of the Lockers, IF indeed Talitha Locker married Uriah McClure. Thus they are double cousins to me. But for the big "IF" above.
Here is the big problem. Who were Talitha Locker's parents? According to my McClure cousins, Talitha Locker was the daughter of John H.Locker, son of the above Walter Locker and Mary Barden, and brother of my Mary Locker. Hence my 3rd great grand uncle. However, I have been unable to prove that Talitha Locker was the daughter of John H. Locker. The proof that my McClure cousins offer is the 1850 Census of Wood County, (W)VA. Therein is listed the family of John Locker and Sarah Ann Locker.
I have stared at the census record for minutes at a time, and I have asked others to do so. It is difficult to look at old census records because of the often poor handwriting of the census enumerators (although in this case it was much better than most). When in doubt about a letter or letter it is necessary to look at several pages of the enumerator to determine how he wrote a given letter.
In this record he definetly wrote the word "Tabitha" or "Tabetha." Some question whether an "i" or an "e" since there is no dot. But the "b" appears to be indisputable. My McClure cousins insist that the name is Talitha, and that she married Uriah McClure.
Now you know where I stand. Is Tabitha Locker and Talitha Locker one and the same person? If so, then all I have written above about my genealogy is true. If not, it doesn't change my ancestry, but sure does a lot of McClures. Because my McClure cousins claim Uriah McClure and his wife as their 2nd great grandparents.
After you sort all of this out please contact me again. I prefer eMail when we get into so much detail - email@example.com
