Hello Finella We corresponded some time ago. Thomas Loch and Christina Duncan arrived on the Midlothian, not the Portland, in 1837. Thomas was 26 years old and his profession was given as Shepherd. Thomas came from the Parish of Lauder. Christina was aged 21 years and was from Lanark in the parish of Partick. I have found a birth record of a Christian Duncan ( believe this is a misspelling ) born in 1811 in Govan, Lanark to Daniel and Christian Duncan. This may be Christina's birth record although the dates are a bit off. Thomas was born in 1809 in the Parish of Lauder County of Berwick to Adam Loch and Janet Wallace. I have a record of a marriage between Adam Loch and Elizabeth Wallace in Roxburgh in 1793 with George Loch as the witness so Elizabeth and Janet might be the same person. The dates seem to match. Janet Wallace was born in 1773 in Westruther ( The Scottish Border region ) and was one of the Border Reiver families. There is a lot of information about the Border Reivers on the Web. Just look it up in Google. Thomas had a sister Agnes, born in 1803. I have been in contact with one of Agnes's descendants, Pamela Gallagher ( Pamela.Gallagher@btinternet.com ). Adam Loch was born in 1768 in Legerwood near Westruther. He had two other siblings a sister, Alison born in 1771 and a brother James, born in 1777. His father was George Loch who married a Janet Yellowlies? George was born in 1744 and married Janet in 1768. This is as far back as I go so far. Pamela may have more information. As far as the Australian descendants go, Thomas and Christina had 9 children: Adam ( named after Thomas's father ) born 1840 Christina born 1841/42 approx no birth record Janet Laura and Agnes twins born 1843 Thomas born 1845 James born 1846 and my great great grandfather Daniel born 1847 ( confirming the birth record I have for Christian Duncan to Daniel ) John born 1851 Charles born 1853 ( I have had contact from one of Charles's descendants - Fenella Loch ) Adam died at 17 years of age from a fall from his horse. Christina married Thomas Patterson in 1856 as you have found out. They had one child. He also died in 1857 and Christina remarried but I can't find my paper record of that second marriage for now. Thomas died in 1853 aged 40 years leaving his widow and 8 children. Presumably 1 child had died by then but I'm not sure which one. His widow Christina remarried to Richard Chambers in 1855. She died in 1895 aged 83 years. Her death certificate lists 8 children living and two males deceased. The surprising thing is that there is an Adam listed as living yet we know Adam the eldest died. She must have had another boy she called Adam although I haven't got any record. Also Agnes is not mentioned. There was no issue from the second marriage which wasn't surprising given her age and having already had 9 children! They all lived around the Tamworth/Gunnedah region. From hereon in I have only tracked the descendants of James Loch hoping someone else could give me more information about them. I recollect you are a descendant of Charles Loch. Is that correct?
