Catherine, thank you. Prof Sykes work is well known, but the most comprehensive listing of surname frequencies is Wales is the National Trust's surname site. The Lloyd distribition map can be found in the 1881 listing at the link below. You will find that Lloyd as a surname is ubiquitous all over Wales, as would be expected from a surname that (unfortunately) does not have a single individual as its origin.

http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/

As surnames came into widespread usage, Lloyd (or rather 'Llwyd') would have been applied as a nickname meaning grey-haired to individuals all across the Welsh-speaking area of Britain. There is thus no single source of the surname (as there can be for other sorts of surname, such as those based on place names). Thus many modern Lloyds will not be related, they may share a surname but they will not share a common ancestor during the last few hundred years when surnames came into usage.

However, it remains possible to distinguish different Lloyd familes by DNA analysis

The Lloyd surname DNA project, when it has many hundreds of members, may begin to be able to sort out the groupings. Regards. David
