John and Herbert LITTLEWOOD/Huddersfield, YORK.
Help please with my Littlewood ancestors. My G-grandfather HERBERT LITTLEWOOD was born in 1863 in Longwood (nr. Huddersfield) Yorkshire, the son of JOHN LITTLEWOOD and supposedly a MARY ANN BROOKE. He was enumerated in the 1881 census living in Netherthong with his maternal grandmother and a cousin EMMA CARTWRIGHT. JOHN LITTLEWOOD's father was said to be JOHN, also, and according to the 1881 census, his mother was BETTY MOORHOUSE LITTLEWOOD, born 1808 in Cartworth, Yorkshire. JOHN LITTLEWOOD was said to have a second wife and two children by her whom he deserted when he left England in the 1870s, supposedly escaping prosecution for stealing a sheep to feed his starving mother. He was naturalized in Alabama, USA, in 1879. His son HERBERT married HANNAH HAIGH in Leeds in 1886, and they soon emigrated to the United States and eventually joined the elder Littlewood in running a woolen mill in North Carolina. A note explaining JOHN's flight was found in old papers. It is addressed to his brother GEORGE LITTLEWOOD, congratulating them both on their outwitting of the law and saying JOHN was setting sail for America, but it was not mailed.
Please, if anyone can place my ancestors in a known Littlewood branch, I'd be most grateful.
