Hi Rhonda,
Very interesting!Yes, the Covington Littleton you mention was my late grandfather, Covington Henry Scott Littleton (1860-1942). He was born near Powellville, MD, the son of Minos Covington Littleton (1830-1860; he died when his only son was five months-old) and Martha Davis Warren (1829-1875), daughter of Lodowick Davis.Minos, whom she married in 1853, was Martha's second husband. Her first husband was a man named Warren (given name unknown), who, according to family tradition, was a sea-captain who was lost at sea. She had two daughters by him who were pre-teens when she married her second husband. She and Minos also had two daughters, but they, like so many children of that era, died in infancy; my grandfather was the only child of their union who survived.
However, less than six weeks after Minos died (of accute alcoholism, so my grandmother Littleton always maintained), Martha married a neighbor (and close kinsnman, so it would appear, of her former mother-in-law, Mary "Polly" Lewis Littleton, b. ca. 1790-d. 1865, wife of my great-great-grandfather Thomas Littleton, b. ca. 1775-d. 1845).Martha and Isaac Lewis had several children. The only one I know anything about was my grandfather's half-brother Johnson Lewis, but there were some half-sisters, too, and one of them may indeed have been named Harriet. If Harriet married a Lewis, she was almost certainly marrying a cousin.(I should add, perhaps, that after Isaac Lewis died, ca, 1870, Martha married for the fourth time to what family tradition says was a "peg-legged Methodist minister" named Webb, whom my grandfather cordially destested; to the best of my knowledge, they had no children together.)
BTW, I met the late Homer Covington Lewis when I visited the Powellville area for the first time in 1968.I encountered him in the local general store/gas station when I introduced myself to the old guys who were hanging out in the store (it was a Sunday afternoon).Homer jumped up & said he'd always heard that he'd been named for "Covington Littleton," that is, my grandfather, to whom he was some sort of half-cousin.Homer took us to the site of the then recently torn down Thomas Littleton house & showed us what he descibed as the "Johnson Lewis house."We also met a "cousin Amanda" (Lewis?) who lived nearby.Wish I'd had enough sense then to interview both Homer & Amanda on Lewis & Littleton family stuff...
Finally, I should perhaps add that my grandfather remained in touch with some his Lewis half-kin & that during WWII my late father, Covington H. S. Littleton, Jr. (aka Scott Littleton), who was a screen writer, helped his half-cousin Mildred Lewis Compton, who lived in Delmar, DE, get a job at Warner Bros. after her divorce. She remained in Southern California and eventually married a guy named Ed Wantland.Haven't seen her or Ed in decades & I presume that they, like most of that generation are long gone by now.
Anyway, hope some of this family lore, etc. helps.Would love to chat with you further by direct e-mail (see address).
Cheers,
Scott
