Indian Scouts

Are there any records of people who were scouts to Custer in the war? I have a family story that says one of my relatives spent a lot of time with the Indians and became a scout for Custer and suggested that he not engage in the Battle. I was hoping to find out if the story is true. Any suggestions for finding records?
