I seen your post or reply to a query on GenForum about the battle of the Little Big Horn.
My Grand uncle Fred Hans was a scout for the Army during what was known as the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian wars of the 1870s on the Northern or Western plains. He died in 1923. Fred Hans scouted for General George Crook, Col. Nelson A. Miles, Col. Ranald Slidell MacKenzie, Lt Gen'l. Phil H. Sheridan, and Gen'l A. H. Terry (among others). Fred Hans was temporarily based with the army initially at Ft Robinson but also assisted all of the other regional military commanders. Fred Hans also frequently visited the Red Cloud agency or Spotted Tail agency and assisted sheriffs and other Indian agents to search for and apprehend "renegade" Indians (including Sitting Bull) who escaped the reservations, or to search for, locate and return white women and their children who had been captured by the natives.
Fred Hans, as a scout, was selected by Gen. Phil H. Sheridan in the early 1880s to investigate the circumstances leading to Custer's Last Stand. Would you happen to have any records or info of the results of that investigation ?
Fred Hans wrote a book titled "The Great Sioux Nation" published in 1907. It has been digitized by Google and can be read on-line. Fred also kept a diary that was published by the South Dakota Historical Society--"Scouting for the US Army 1876-1879 the diary of Fred M Hans"
