Please note the new email address. My switchboardmail address becomes inactive on 30 January.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any documentation exists for the John & Dorothy connection.Littell's History of the Passaic Valley also has a disproven connection to New Englnd Littles.
My great grandmother, Catherine Littell b 1848, Mason Co., IL, was the daughter of two Somerset Co., NJ, Littells. She said the name was pronouced 'little' in the East.I think the speculation that the name was translated from Petit makes more sense, especially since this branch first is documented at Elizabeth, NJ, and there was a Petit who was an original freeholder. My gg mother also claimed they were French and looked the part.
Please let me know and post any documentation that turns up.I've searched French records for other spellings.A friend at La Rochelle said the name Littell sounded like it could have come from Poitou, the area north of there, but I've never found it.
