From reading other replies and messages on this forum, I can see that you know quite a lot about Lithuania and such! I have several questions for you. If my ancestor's name, Anna Brenner, was Americanized in the New York census of 1900, 1910, and 1920 and also written as such in her admittance records for Matteawan State Hospital, would her son's birth certificate in New York City (if he has one..) be written with the name Brenner or would it have his Russian/Jewish variation? Her hospital records state she was Jewish and from Vilna,Lithuania and other records it just says Russia. I've read your comments in places about name variations.

Also do you have any suggestions or steps in finding records for an ancestor from Lithuania? I have found several matches for ships into New York City which were matched to the name, Anna Brenner. She has been listed in hospital and census records as married, but the husband is "unknown" in her medical records. Did young girls back in the 1890's travel to New York alone or usually with relatives? Should I be looking for an entry with a relative? Any help in which steps I should begin in searching for her would be greatly appreciated!
