W.,
I found Mike's naturalization papers from 1927 on ancestry.com.Here is what they say:
Mike was living on McKinley Ave., in East Vandegrift, PA.He said he was born on May 15, 1883.He arrived in the U.S. on April 07, 1901 on the S.S. Bremen from Bremen, Germany. He lived in "Swaleskes" in Wilno Russia/Lithuania.On another line, he says the village is "Swaleske".
His children's names and birth dates were [names as typed on the forms]:
Ova, Sept. 15, 1905
Bessie, June 22, 1909
Veronica, Dec. 06, 1910
Sophia, May 16, 1911
Casimir, Mar. 04, 1915
Nellie, July 17, 1919
Alfonso, Jan. 03, 1921
Wilno is Vilnius and refers to the province or gubernia of Russia that embraced a good portion of present day Lithuania.
I cannot find any village whose name begins "Sval-" (Lithuania does not use the letter "w" but "v" instead). However, there are these two village possibilities:
Smalis^ke in the Lazdijai district, which is now very near the border with present day Poland. In fact, I visited the next village from there in 2005 because my maternal ancestors are from this area.
Smaliskes in the S^alc^ininkai district. This is also very near a border, but now on the eastern border of Lithuania, near present day Belarus. This area was once part of the Kingdom of Poland, which was taken over the Czarist Russia.
While I cannot be certain that either of these places are in fact "Swaliskes", I'd keep them as distinct possibilities.
I also found a 1920 U.S. Census for the family and a 1942 WWII draft record for Mike -- in both cases he was living on McKinley in East Vandegrift.
