Carol,
I found three records that may shed light (or more darkness) on your search.
1.In the 1930 U.S. Census for Newark, NJ, at 27 Garibaldi St., there is George Stramel [name as indexed on ancestry.com], age 40 [born around 1890], arrived in the U.S. in 1906.His wife, Johanna, age 36 [born around 1894], arrived in the U.S. in 1914.They were married around 1912 or 1913.They lived there with their two children, both born in New Jersey:
Anna, age 12 [born around 1918]
Emil, age 5 [born around 1925]
2.In the 1942 draft registration records, there is George Stramat, born on Dec. 16, 1889, living at 27 Garibaldi St., in Newark, NJ.The person he listed as most likely to know his address:Johanna Stramat, living at the same address.
So it would appear that the mother of Emil is Johanna, who may well be George's 2nd wife. The WWI draft registrations on ancestry.com show George, his brother, Joseph, and another Stramat: John, born on Aug. 13, 1894, all living either at or next door to one another in Brooklyn on Stagg or Stagy Street.John said he was born in Suwalki, Russia.
3.Arriving on Nov. 08, 1906, the passenger manifest for the S.S. Bremen from Bremen shows a George Stramat, age 16 [born around 1890], going to his sister, Anna, in Richmond, Long Island. He was born and last resided in Os^turki, Russia.George's brother Joseph lists his wife's name as "Anna" in the 1930 U.S. Census (though it is Olga in 1920 and "Alga" in Joseph's WWII draft registration.)The attributes of this passenger's entry have enough elements corresponding to your George that it enough to make it likely in my opinion to be him.
The U.S. Census for 1940, when Emil would be around 15, will not be made public until 2012.
4.A 1981 phone directory shows an Emil H. Stramat, born Jan., 1925, was living at 719 Stanley Te St., Roselle, NJ and in 1993 a Judy A. Stramat, born Mar., 1947, was living at the same address.Perhaps father and daughter; perhaps Emil was the son of George?A 1992 and 1993 directory entry for Joseph E. Stramat, born in Nov. 1947, was living at 531 Spruce St., in Roselle, NJ, the same address as a Dorothy M. Stramat, born in Sept. 1943, was living at.Could Joseph be Emil's child?
Perhaps this information will help in your search.
