Marie, thank you so much for this lead. I looked up the manifest and it does look promising for Sam Barter of Denver, CO. Obviously, Barter is not a Polish or Lithuanian, or Unkranian name, so Batthauer may be very possible. The dates and ages are close. Interesting that Sam was said to travel without parents, who came later, so an older brother would make sense.
I read an interesting article on jewishgen.org, which talked about variant names in the Jewish Russian population, often reverting to a wife's maiden name, or grandparent name, instead of the family name, which was not very fixed. That may explain the DavidKeller being listed as a father.
Anyway, I will try so tracking, and this is a great start!
