Regarding people coming from the American Zone of Germany.That would have only been after the end of WW II in Europe (May 1945).
American immigration laws were changed to allow WW II refugees (DPs - displaced persons) to enter the U.S. around 1948 or so.That means your ancestors wouldn't have arrived in the U.S. until that time.
My guess is that your mother and others lived in the Williamsburg part of Brooklyn.
If so, ask her if she ever knew a woman named Mary Jonauskas/Yonauskas (born circa 1878 in Lithuania and died in Brooklyn in 1972).Her husband was named Valerian.
