Ellynmarie,
Can you give me the URL for the ship's record on the EIDB or else the particulars so I can look her up myself?Maybe I can spot something helpful.
She won't be in the online SSDI if she died BEFORE 1962 or so when they first started entering names into the database. That doesn't mean she didn't get an SSN.
SSNs started being issued in Nov 1936 so if she was alive at that point she probably would have one.If she left a will when she died, her SSNs might be there. Also, she may have listed relatives and their addresses back in the old country.
It's better to give SSA a SSN otherwise they may not be able to find the entry because it's not spelled the way you told them.
My grandfather's surname spelling in the SSDI is one that he only used for "official" documents.Out of 65 million names in the SSDI, his is the only one with that surname spelling.
If she got married in a Lithuanian parish, the church register may have her place of birth or baptism (though likely written in Latin).
If she was still an alien as of 1940, she would have had to fill out paper work with the INS.
There are still a good many ways to skin this cat.Hang in there.
Tom S.
