Carol,

I dealing with place names in Lithuania, you shoould expect to see different spellings based upon whether the language is Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, German, or Yiddish.

I gave you the additional spellings for Kaunas (Lithuanian) in case you came across the place name written in some other language.

For example:

Lithuania (English)
Litauen (German)
Litwa (Polish)

Lithuania was occupied by Russia from 1795 to 1918, so when your father left, the place where he was born was considered to be "Russia" regardless of what it had been before 1795 or after 1918.

All four of my grandparents and my father were born in Lithuania so I have had it easy in that I've only had to focus on one country doing my family research.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Again, focus on the U.S. records first so you can find where they were baptized in Lithuania.

Good hunting.

Tom S.
