Helen,
Thank you for your reply
It would be great if you could send me the scanned copy of the document. My e-mail is [email protected] .I am intregued at all the strange and conflicting material concerning the Lipton family. however, The facts of my investigation are as follows :-
My wife - Susan Fowles's father was William Vernon Fowles. His sister was Isabella Fowles and his brothers were James and Thomas Fowles. Although the surname might be unfamiliar, William told his children that he and his siblings were the illigitamate children of Sir Thomas Lipton. His Mother was Lipton's houskeeper Alice Nugent. It appeared that she had married a man called James Hugh Fowles - but I have found no record of him!!
The UK 1901 Census showes Alice Nugent living with Sir Thomas Lipton at Osidge in East Barnet London UK under the name of nugent - not Fowles. Her children (under the name of Fowles were living in Croydon London - there was no record of James Fowles there . Strangely, both properties had housekeepers and servants - but no parents!!. My suspicion is that there was no James Fowles at all. But that Thomat Lipton used this property to keep his illigitamate children. William Fowles was believed to crew Sir Thomases Shamrock sailing vessels. His wife told us that William and his siblings received an allowance from Sir Thomas's estate of £43 per week ( a lot of money in the 1930's!)until Alice's death
So there we have the mystery - Are you and my wife Sue related? or is ths just another story/rumour/fiction of the late 19th earlt 20th century from the Lipton archives?!!!
