I am searching for descendants, antecedents, or siblings of William JOHNSTON b.bef.ca.1782 Co. Fermanagh, Ireland d.1830's probably in Indiana, PA. William arrived via Philadelphia with his widowed mother, who I believe was a LIPTON, and six siblings
ca. 1798 or later. They settled in Center Co., PA with his mother's relatives, one of
whom I believe was Robert LIPTON, who was first a weaver and later a tavern keeper
in Milesburg, PA. William was naturalized in 1802 or 3 and shortly thereafter married
Jane RAMSEY, Daughter of James RAMSEY a boatman from Upper Bald Eagle Twp.
Jane's Mother was a BLAIR. William was a schoolmaster.
William JOHNSTON and Jane RAMSEY had 11 children. The sixth was my sixth great-
grandfather, Robert Lipton JOHNSTON, b.Huntington Furnace., PA 1811 or
1815 d.Ebensburg, PA. 1890. He was first a schoolmaster, like his father, later a
lawyer and judge, banker, & newspaper publisher in Ebensburg. Married Evelina
RODRIGUE of Philadelphia ca. 1842. Their only daughter Josephine married John
SCANLAN (Jr.?) after the Civil War.
Maxine BAKER CREAMER has given me detailed information demonstrating that two of Robert's siblings were Elizabeth JOHNSTON, who married Joseph OATMAN in 1834 at
Williamsburg, PA, and James JOHNSTON, father of Barbara Johnston BAKER of Hollidaysburg, PA. Another sibling may have been Mary JOHNSTON who along with mother Jane was in residence with Robert & family during the Census of 1870. Jane Ramsey JOHNSTON died at the home of her grandson, William Rotkey, in Grant Township, PA on 30 Nov 1877. The name of William’s mother is not yet known.
