African-American Lipseys

Hello Matthew,
My mother is Margaret Lipsey Bolin. Her father was B.L. Lipsey. My GGrandfather was James Arthur Lipsey. His father, I thought, was Ricketson Lipsey. It was my understanding that Ricketson owned 18 slaves which would help explain the Afro-American Lipseys.James Arthur Lipsey was conscipted into Confederate service in Sept. 1864. His brothers Ira, John and one other joined the 5th SCV. One of the brothers died at Centerville Va.James Arthur Lipsey served in the 18th SCV, died in 1903 and is buried in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery near Jonesville,SC. I have never been able to clear up the Ricketson Sr. and Ricketson Jr. part of our family. Perhaps you could help.Years ago my uncle Frank Lipsey(now 91) took me to the site that he claimed was the Lipsey homestead (1500 acres). I have not confirmed this but I have seen the books in the Union County Courthouse where Ricketson Lipsey began buying land in Union County.I will be glad to hear from you.
