R.C. Lipsey Confederate Veteran Mississippi
article from the Confederate Veteran mag., dated April, 1919, page 158.
LETTERS TO THE VETERAN
R.C. LIPSEY writes from Lexington, Miss.;
" I was a member of the University Grays , a company composed of students of the University of Miss., Oxford, which was mustered into service at Lynchburg, Va., on the 13th of May, 1861,[ one hundred and thirty-one members], as a part of the 11th Mississippi Regiment. With it I followed the fortunes of war until the battle of Sharpsburg, where I lost a leg and have been a great sufferer ever since. But if I could have known the result beforehand I would still have willingly entered the contest and died to save my beloved Southland. But, I am now a loyal 76 year old Rebel, so called [I had 6 nephews 'over there']. So far as I know, I am the only living member of our company. If there are others, I would like to hear from them ."
