Bricklend,

It may be that some of your Lipscomb information from your several recent posts is not completely correct. James Washington Lipscomb was a son of Nathan Lipscomb (Jr.) and his wife, Rebecca Bullock Williams. She was a daughter of James Williams (Jr.) who was a son of Col. James Williams who died at Kings Mountain during the American Revolution. Nathan Lipscomb (Jr.) (I have found no evidence that his middle name was Smith) was the youngest son of Nathan Lipscomb (b. 9 Nov 1762, d. 26 Sep 1820) and his first wife Tahpenes Bullock (b. 10 Jul 1766, d. 1 Jan 1807). (There is some published information that Nathan (Sr.) had a middle name of Smith but research proves this to be a misreading of Bible records) Tahpenes (often mispelled but look at her tombstone and other records for evidence of how it was spelled) was a daughter of John Bullock and his wife Mary Mitchell.

I use parentheses around (Jr.) and (Sr.) because the men themselves did not actually use these suffixes in the records I have found.

Nathan and Rebecca Lipscomb lived in Abbeville District, South Carolina. Both Nathan and Rebecca died young (he 29, she 19) less than a year apart in 1829 and 1830, and their two young sons, Thomas Jefferson Lipscomb and James Washington Lipscomb went to live with their uncle and guardian, John Lipscomb at White Hall plantation in Abbeville District. He was my 3G grandfather. Interestingly, John Lipscomb also had sons named James Nathan Lipscomb and Thomas Jefferson Lipscomb, so be careful when sorting out all these Jameses and Thomases. The guardianship accounts are recorded in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Thomas Jefferson Lipscomb (8 Dec 1826, d. 29 Aug 1873), the brother of Watt Lipscomb, married Martha Margaret Jordan, a daughter of Jonathan Jordan and his wife Mary Ann Miles Marshall. James Washington (Watt) Lipscomb (b. 1830, d. 1890) married, as you indicate, Sarah Eugenia Poole (but I have found an e on the end of her maiden name). She was a daughter of Abraham Petty Poole and his wife Sarah Wallace Williams.

Nathan Lipscomb (Sr.) moved from Virginia down to Ninety Six District, South Carolina, during the early part of the Revolution and settled practically in the shadows of old Ninety Six fort. There is a family cemetery on the old Lipscomb homeplace. It is Nathan Lipscomb (Sr.) whose parents were Thomas and Mary Smith Lipscomb.

In addition to Helmer's book, Lipscomb: 300 Years in America, see also Greenwood County Sketches by Margaret Watson, pp 285-290.

I have written an article on the hard-to-find Nathan Lipscomb family cemetery which I would be glad to share with you. I would be interested in your information on John Nathan and Talluah Anderson Lipscomb and their descendants. Write me directly candrews AT mindspring (a dot com address).
