Hello,

I am seeking information on Adam LIPPERT (age 28 in 1880) born about 1852 in Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. He, his wife Mary (age 29) and son Joseph (age 5), are listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for Erie county, City of Buffalo, New York. His occupation is listed as butcher (der Fleischer oder der Schlächter) and hers as "tends butcher shop". The residence is listed as 627 William Street at that time.

Mary Lippert's place of birth is listed as Würtemberg, Germany. Their son Joseph Lippert's birthplace, however, is listed as "NY" (assumed to be Buffalo). Because Joseph is aged 5, this would imply a birth year of about 1875. Since Joseph was born in this country, it would indicate that Adam and Mary most probably emmigrated from Germany to the United States sometime before 1875 (see 1910 U.S. Census below for additional information).

Apparently Adam was well off enough to have a live in domestic servant by the name of Louisana Klassert (age 19) also from Germany.

In the Buffalo City Directory for 1874 there is an Adam Lippert listed with an occupation of butcher residing at 899 Smith Street in Buffalo. In the 1880 City Directory there is an Adam Lippert listed with a meat market at 627 Broadway (note: different "627" address) in Buffalo.

In the Buffalo City Directories for 1898 and 1903, there are entries for Adam Lippert residing at 64 North Parade.

Adam and Mary are found again in the U.S. Census of 1910 still living at 64 North Parade in Buffalo, New York. Adam's occupation is now listed as the owner of a real estate business. This is collaborated by an entry in the 1910 Buffalo City Directory showing a listing for an Adam Lippert residing at 64 North Parade with a real estate and insurance business office located at 336 Brisbane Building.

The census taker records that Adam immigrated in 1870 and Mary in 1869. Since their son Joseph was born in the U.S. about 1875 (see above), it is assumed that they met and married here in this country sometime between 1870 and 1875.

The census records show that he and his wife had been married for 38 years (implies that they were married about 1872±). They now have another son recorded as residing with them, Leo, aged 22 at the time of the census (this places his birth year about 1888±).

Again, Adam is evidently well off enough to have a domestic servant by the name of Mary Schreiner living with them.

Adam Lippert (and family) next show up in the 1920 U.S. Census now aged 67 and residing in Amherst, New York (a suburb of Buffalo). Adam and Mary are believed to have had three (3) living children (Joseph, Leo, and an unknown).

I am trying to learn just *where* in Bavaria that Adam originated from and whether he might have had any siblings that also immigrated into the Buffalo, New York, area (most probably in the early 1890's).

Any information or assistance (or corrections) that you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Tom Lippert
