Hi Corrine,
Thanks for the information you sent me about your family. This is my Lippe line:
Phillip Ernst Rene Lippe and Marie Francoise Fuseau dit Roch had Joseph-Sulpice Zur Lippe. He married Marie-Anne Hetu. They hadJoseph Lippe. He married Sophie Beaugrand Champagne. They had Gilbert Lippe in 1832. He appears as a widower in the 1880 Canadian Census, living in Lanoraie, Berthier, Quebec with several of his children. Sometime between 1880 and 1883, he moved to Southbridge, Massachusetts. He married Sophie Anger. They had a son, Omer Joseph Lippe, in 1885. He married Marie Louise Peloquin. They had a daughter, Jeannette Marie Lippe, in 1910. Jeannette was my grandmother.
I'm not completely positive why my branch of the Lippe family moved from Canada to Southbridge; however, many people moved to Southbridge around that time to find work. Southbridge was the home of the American Optical Company which employed many French-Canadians.
My mother (still alive) grew up speaking French. She went to a Catholic school in Southbridge where French was the primary language. I never learned French because my father couldn't speak it and didn't want everyone in the family to be able to speak a language he didn't understand.
