LINTHICUM [776]

Linscombe and variants including Lincombe occur about 109 times on the British IGI and most of these are in the West Country. There is a settlement in Devon now spelt "Lincombe" and another in Worcestershire spelt "Lincomb". In the village of Hemyock in Devon are found a 17C Linscombe family whose members include Thomas, Richard and Mary. [The form Linthicum OR Linthicombe is not found amongst parish records on the British IGI nor is it the name of a settlement]

The parish records of the church of All Hallows (ALIAS South River), Anne Arundel Co, have a complicated history and dates should be checked against original documents.

The ancestors of the Linthicum family were natives of Wales where the name was spelled Lynthicum, and when they removed to Liverpool, England, the spelling was changed. They owned a line of ships that plied between Liverpool and Baltimore, Md. There were five brothers of that name; one remained in Liverpool where he died, a very wealthy man; he had started in life as a poor boy. His fortune was left to his descendants in the United States who have never been able to recover it. His four brothers came to America; one settled in Kentucky, one in Virginia and two in Maryland, one of these two on a farm in the lower part of Frederick County, where he spent his life in farming. Charles H. Linthicum is a descendant of this man. Mr. Linthicum's gret-great-great grandfather, Slingsberry Linthicum, settled in what is now Howard, then Frederick County, Md. where he spent his life in the cultivation of his farm on which he died. [Thomas J C Williams & Folger McKinsey HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND (1997) 1227, originally published in 1910] [This unsourced information is not backed up by any historical record]

Thomas Linthicum appears to have been a Member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) as were his children and it is apparently their births (rather than their christenings) that are listed in the All Hallows parish record. Some members of the family were christened into the Church of England immediately before marriage and Milcah just before her death. The following note is unsourced from the internet "Thomas Linthicum, the immigrant, evidently was an intransigent and troublesome member of the Society of Friends. According to the "Third Haven Meeting" records, it appears that at a quarterly meeting, it was determined to discipline Thomas Linthicum, following the receipt of "a full and certain account from the Men's Meeting at the Western Shore concerning unworthy and disorderly carriage and behavior of Thos Lincicomb to Thos Everdon in particular and Friends in general," notwithstanding the previous efforts of Friends to compose the matter at issue."
