Hi, Megan,I am interested in the Linthicum family, because I’m researching my great grandparents, Samuel and Rhoda Stone, who lived in Adams County, Illinois, and had property there adjoining Linthicum. Also, Rhoda Stone is cited in the 1841 will and testament of James Thompson of Hampshire County, VA (later WV) along with his granddaughter, Sarah Linthicum. No relationship is given for Rhoda, although widow Rhoda Stone married Enos Thompson in Hancock County, IL, on 19 January 1843. Please let us know if you come across Rhoda’s connection/relationship to your family.
The will is in the book, Early RecordsHampshire County VirginiaNow West Virginia, compiled by Clara McCormick Sage & L.S. Jones, Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore 1976, LC 75-90051, p.136for Romney, Hampshire Co., Virginia, Synopsis of Wills.
“THOMPSON, James 9-27-1841; pr. 8-26-1844.W., Elizabeth, exec. 5 ch. 1-Rebecca, 2-Isaac, 3-John, 4-Abraham, 5-James. Nm. [name mentioned]RHODA STONE,Sarah Johnson, rel. not stated. Gr. Ch., Sarah Ann LINTHICUM, Tempa Harris and Mary Carter.Exec., Albert Carter and Wm. Hersman, Sec., Wm. Doran, Isaac H. Thompson and Wm. J. Monroe. Wit., Lydia Stonsman, Amos and Joseph Huffman.”
Also, on page 123 is the will for Sarah Ann LINTHICUM.
“LINTHICUM, Sarah -3-4-1815; pr. 5-18-1828.Unmarried.Her mother, Mary, land during life; sister, Margaret Lyons; sister, Ann Linthicum; bros., Joseph and Hezekiah Linthicum.Exec., Timothy Smith.Wit., Elijah, Timothy and Joseph Smith.”Based on another book,Genealogy of the Linthicum and allied families (1936), by Matilda Badger, she has to be connected to James Thompson’s grandchild, Sarah Ann Linthicum.
Badger’s book shows siblings Joseph & Hezekiah LINTHICUM and Margaret Lyons were the children of Archibald (b. 1757 Montgomery Co MD), a Rev War vet. He married Nancy in 1783 Anne Arundel Co. Maryland.
--Joseph was born 1784 WV, married Millie THOMPSON. Their son John D. lived with family in Quincy, Adams Co IL.
--Hezekiah's son Archibald was b 1805 and his son Joel was b 1810 in Hampshire Co Va. Joel's son married a Foster and their child "lives in PLAINVILLE, Illinois."See Badger’s book online beginning on page 54 for more detail at http://www.archive.org/details/genealogyoflinth00badghttp://www.archive.org/details/genealogyoflinth00badg
Samuel Stone has been credited as a founder of the town of Plainville, Adams County, Illinois.
Both Samuel Stone and Archibald Linthicum were Methodist preachers.
Here are a few Adams Co. land transactions for Samuel Stone and neighbors, Joseph and Archibald Linthicum, and Philo Thompson:
-- 1833 & 36 Adams Co, IL Samuel STONE buys land 3S 6W Sec 31
-- 1833 Adams Co, IL Joseph LINTHICUM buys land 3S 6W Sec 30
-- 1834 & 36 Adams Co, IL Archibald LINTHICUM buys land 3S 6W Sec 20
-- 1837 Adams Co, IL Philo E. THOMPSON buys land 3S 6W Sec 30
Now to figure out Mrs. Rhoda Stone’s connection to the Linthicum family.Interesting to note that in 1850, William G. Lithacum, age 20, is living in the household of Samuel and Rhoda’s son, Abraham T. Stone in Adams Co IL, and that Abe’s six-year-old daughter is named Sarah A.
