I would suggest you try to contact genealogical societies or historical societies in the relevant counties. Virginia is very big on genealogy and there are things like property records, census records and other legal documents that can reveal the relationships. That is why I mentioned the Arlington Co. library as one I know from using it. I am in Florida now or I would look there for you.
