Must be my week to relate the material Sweetser gave me. I have a bad xerox of an article from Antiques magazine for 8/67. The article is an Antiques book preview of Walter Muir Whitehall's "Dumbarton Oaks, the History of a a Georgetown House and Garden", Harvard University Press, 1967. Number 8 in the cameos in the article is Edward Magruder Linthicum (1797-1869). Probably better to see if the magazine and the book are avilable through a library. Mr. Linthicum is described as a successful hardware merchant and the owner of the house first known as Monterey and later as the Oaks. Following owners are Kate Mitchell (Linthicum) Dent, Edward Linthicum Dent (grandson of Kate). He had an engineering degree but ran into debt and had to sell the house and land, for about ten times what he had paid for it.
