On the top of page 19, in Matilda Badger's book, she lists the children of Eleanor Sherwood and Jeremiah Field as: Joseph, Benjamin, John, Ruth, Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Rachel, Tabitha, Jeremiah and William.
Eleanor and Jeremiah did, indeed, have eleven children, and some of the names were the same, but what is included in Mrs. Badger's book is actually a list of the children of Jeremiah's uncle, also named Jeremiah Field. The actual children of Jeremiah and Eleanor Sherwood Field, taken from his 1830 will, estate settlement papers and census records, goes as follows:
1. Martha "Patsy" Field (c.1795-1863) married Miles McDaniel in 1814, and went to Indiana. 1830 census lists 7 children for them, but his 1838 will only mentions five. An additional child may have been born in 1837, or she may have been a grandchild.
2. Benton Field (1797-1872) a Methodist minister in Leaksville, Rockingham Co., NC. Married three times: 1. Jane Gamble in 1819, 2. Martha F. Guerrant in 1824, 3. Lucy Hopper, the widow Lane, in 1856. Five sons and one daughter, all but the last son born to Martha F. Guerrant.
3. Rebecca Field. Census records are unclear as to whether she was born between 1795 and 1800, or between 1800 and 1810. She last appears with her mother's household in 1830, and was not there in 1840... dead? married?
4. Frances Field (born either between 1795 and 1800, or between 1800 and 1810). Married Eli Staley in 1828. I have the names of two children for them, a boy and a girl, but in 1840, their Randolph County, NC, household consisted of 4 children of an age to be theirs, and 2 males too old to be their children.
5. Elswick S. Field (c.1808-aft.1860) married Guilianna L. Lindsay (1807-1885) in Guilford County, NC. Lived in Guilford til after 1850, moved to Mountain Island, Gaston Co. in the 1850s, where Elswick was associated with the building and running of a cotton mill. Had moved to Leaksville, Rockingham Co. by 1860, where he was superintendent of another cotton mill. I don't know what happened to him after 1860. Eight children, the seventh, John Andrew Field (1846-1883), was my great great grandfather.
6. Hugh Field, born circa 1810/11, as best I can figure from the census and his father's estate settlement. Was with the family in 1830, age listed as 15 to 20 (ie.1810 to 1815), but I am not sure whether the son born between 1810 and 1820 in the 1840 census with his mother is Hugh or his younger brother Jeremiah. He was an adult in 1832, ie. born in 1811 or before.
7. Mary "Polly" Field (1813-1908) was listed as underage in an 1832 guardian report. She married Kindred Craven in 1835. Five children listed are listed in her obituary. I have a copy of it. Lived in Randolph County, NC.
8. Eleanor "Nelly" Field (c.1815-aft.1880) was listed as underage in an 1832 guardian report. She married David Teague in 1840. Five children listed in the 1860 Randolph County, NC census.
9. Jeremiah Field (born between 1815 and 1820) was listed as underage in an 1832 guardian report, ie. born after 1811. May be the male born between 1810 and 1820 in his mother's household in 1840, or this may be his older brother Hugh. May be the Jeremiah J. Fields listed as having been born c.1818 in NC, in the 1880 Copiah County, Mississippi census.
10. Tabitha Field (born between 1815 and 1820, per the 1830 census) was listed as under age in an 1832 guardian report. Does not appear in her mother's household in 1840...dead? married?
11. William Field, (c.1820/1-1852) was listed as underage in an 1832 guardian report. He married Cleopatra Henley in 1846, and had at least two, probably three sons. He was living in his mother's household in 1840, and she was listed in his household in 1850. He was a school teacher and farmer. He was killed in a tragic accident at age 32 in 1852.
