Dear Mr. Linthicum, This topic thread was drawn to my attention by my kinsman, Terry Linthicum, and I have just had an enjoyable time reading your various other fascinating postings on this site. I was interested to see the posts you'd made about Linthicums in the silent movies, and the lady who wrote the book on costuming Shakespeare, and would love to learn more about them. My mother is a professional actress, and I worked for five years for a Shakespearean theatre company, so I wonder if it is in the blood. Not long ago, I came across a reference to a Hezekiah Linthicum Bateman from Maryland, who was an actor in the 1800s. Do you know how he fits into the family? I was quite interested to see that you gave Jane Baldwin Cotton as the name of the wife of Thomas Linthicum (c.1640-1701) who came to Maryland prior to 1658. In a chart that was sent to me several years ago by Dr. William Winter of Florida, it had Jane's maiden name given as Spurlock, but it had no documentation along with it. He said he would send me more detailed information later, but I have yet to receive it. I was quite interested to see her name listed as Jane Baldwin Cotton, and would love to learn more. It was most interesting to me to see your theory about Thomas Linthicum being of English origin instead of Welsh. Unless I am mistaken (and I very well may be), I think many of the families his children and grandchildren married into were also of Welsh origins... ie. Francis, Williams, etc. I also associate the Quaker faith with Welsh ancestry... though I don't really know why I have that impression. I was amused to see the mention of your parents' copy of Matilda Badger's book having corrections written in the margins. I've got another set of corrections you can add, in my line. My line of descent goes as follows: Thomas Linthicum (c.1640-1701) & Jane Hezekiah Linthicum (d.1721) & Milcah Francis, m. 1697 Francis Linthicum (1709-1765) & Eleanor Williams (1717-1788) m.1732 Frances Linthicum (1749-1806) & Daniel Sherwood III (1749-1838) m.1768 Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859) & Jeremiah Field (c.1764-1830) circa 1794 Elswick S. Field (c.1808-aft.1860) & Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885) m.1831 John Andrew Field (1846-1883) & Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) m.1865 Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902) & Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947) m.1888 John Levi Field (1899-1963) & Eunice Virginia Stearns (1906-1983) m.1929 Joanna Field (won't tell her age) & Kenneth O. Pankow, m. 1962 John Field Pankow...that's me. In Mrs. Badger's book, she has a mistaken list of the children of Eleanor Sherwood and Jeremiah Field. It puzzled me for some time, until I realized what she must have done. The names listed there were not the children of Jeremiah Field and Eleanor Sherwood. Instead, they were the names of the children of Jeremiah's uncle, also named Jeremiah Field (aft.1727-c.1821), and his wife Mary, maiden name unknown, perhaps Oliver. I am not exactly sure which is your line of Linthicums. Are you descended from the Williams family? If so, I have some information on the ancestors of Eleanor Stockett (b.1693) who married Richard Williams (1684-1748) that I would be happy to share with you. The Stockets were an old and distinguished English family. I'd love to have a copy of the information you mentioned, and would be happy to reimburse you for the cost of copying and mailing. Best regards, John Field Pankow Asheville, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
