Greg, The maps of the Matthews lands were great. Some of the lands were on the northern border of (today’s) Greensville Co VA, correct? I think maybe the Three Creeks lands were in the northern part of (today’s) Greensville Co. I looked at deeds on your website and will have to study them more closely but the 17 Feb 1745 deed of Samuel Williams to Robert Stanfield on the north side of Tar River and on Stoney Creek (witness Thomas Mathis) is for land in (today’s) Nash Co NC and Stoney Creek is the eastern part of Little Peachtree Creek where our Lindsey’s eventually moved about 25 years later. The geography of that deed does not fit with the others deeds but Samuel Williams did own land adjoining William Lindsey in Halifax Co NC. His father, William Williams, was recorded with TCM. Could that have been TCM on Stoney Creek in 1745? It would be interesting to find out where that rumor about James Matthews Jr marrying Anne Lindsey came from. I am guessing she would have been about the same age as William Lindsey. Could I get the deeds (or abstracts of them) you mentioned (8) that mention both Mathews and Lindsey? I believe (guessing) that William Lindsey turned 21 about 1743 and that there were only two land records or so (as a witness and for a patent) in Brunswick Co VA for him that I am sure of; however, I feel certain the 1745 land patent for Wm Linsey on Three Creeks was the Rocky Swamp William Lindsey and that looks very much like land speculation in which he had the land sold before it was published (and I am guessing he did that to get money to move to NC). Rocky Swamp on topographic maps is long and narrow and seems to have run (N-NW to S-SE) from the north far above Halifax city south to the Halifax/Nash Co line. Some land records I have seen said the land was on the north side of Rocky Swamp and later records for the same land said the south side. It looks like the following records are for lands adjoining the earlier or earliest Mathews’ land and his neighbors’ lands on Rocky Swamp: 1753 Granville District Plat dated Oct 6 to John Worley in Edgecombe Co NC joining William Parker, John Cheaves, Thomas Manthose (Thomas Mathews?), John Broom, and Worleys Corner. 1758 part of Edgecombe Co NC became Halifax Co NC 1760 Granville District Land Grant to John Worley July 22 in Halifax Co NC joining William Parker, John Cleaves, Thomas Marthos (Thomas Mathews?), John Broom, and the said Worley. 1758 Granville District Land Grant to Francis Drake Plat dated Sept 1 in Edgecombe Co NC on the South side of Rocky Swamp joining Joseph Burt, William Wiggins, John Worley, Drakes corner on a branch. 1760 Granville District Land Grant to John Hopkins July 4 in Halifax Co NC on the South side of Rocky Swamp joining Joseph Burt, William Wiggins, John Worley, Drakes Line, a Branch and said swamp. 1762 Granville District Land Grant to Howard Worley Jan 10 in Halifax Co NC on both sides of Connaway Creek (Conway Creek, Little Fishing Creek) joining a Branch, Abraham Brinkley, John Worley, Thomas Mathis (Thomas Mathews), Brooms Line, and James Mathis (James Mathews). 1764 James Matthews Sr and wife Ann of Halifax Co NC to William Daniel 3 Oct 1764 part of land acq by James Matthews Sr 10 Jan 1762, joining Abraham Brinkley, John Clevis, James Matthews, Conway Ck (Little Fishing Creek) 1778 William Daniel sold 18 Apr 1778 part of land acquired by James Matthews Sr 10 Jan 1762 joining Abraham Brinkley, John Cleve, James Mathews, Conway Ck. 1778 James Matthis planter of Halifax Co NC to Jesse Lee of Dinwiddie VA 24 Mar 1778 joining Cleaves (?), John Worley, Broom, Thomas Matthews, William Daniels.
