I'm a bit confused as the dates and ages don't seem to me to add up. If your great grandfather was 14 in 1909 then he must have been born in 1895. If he was born in 1887 the he'd have been 22 in 1909. Maybe you have info. that will clarify which it is?
I suggest you then look for him in the 1901 census (on Ancestry or Scotlands People), with a father who is a miner. When you locate a possible family, note the place and likely date of birth of the father, and try to find him in the earlier censuses, hopefully with his father the preacher, to confirm you have the correct family.
Then you should be able to find Peter's birth on the Scotlands people website as all births after 1855 had to be registered. The birth certificate will give his parents names and father's occupation, also their date and place of marriage, which you can then look up. If that is also after 1855 then you will obtain the names of their parents too.
