Origin & Parentage of Lindesmiths

I chose to use a new name for this line of discussion to help set it off as a new information.
I hope to update/revive Mike Moore’s discussion of the real parents of Joseph, and Mary
Jo Freeman’s Lindenschmidts in Switzerland.

The first Lindenschmidts, Johannes Daniel and Johannes Ludwig, that immigrated to PA
on the Edinburgh on Sept 5, 1748, are brothers. However, the first “Lindenschmidt” to
America was their sister, Maria Magdalena Altenberger, referenced by Mary Jo. She and
her husband, Johannes, arrived on the ship, St. Andrew Galley, on Sept 26, 1737.

All three, along with at least 4 others, were born in Hassloch, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.
Hassloch is a village a few miles east of Neustadt-an-der-Weinstrasse.

Most of the following are from “Palatine Origins of Some Pennsylvania” by Annette
Kunselman Burgert, published 1/1/2000 by AKB Publications, Myerstown, PA. Her
references in Europe are:
Hassloch Reformed Kirchenbuch(Church Book)
Hassloch Gerichtsbuch(Court Book)
((Herein referenced by AKB & pg #.
In America ((varied sources and are listed individually))

AKB pg 214-215 and some LDS info: Batch K986541, Call Nr 0488291 Film,
Kirchenbuch 1700-1799 Evangelische Kirche Hassloch.

Johannes Lindenschmidt and wife, Maria Elisabetha (married before church records
begin). Johannes was buried 11 Dec 1747, age 76. (my estimated date of birth, 1671)
Maria Elisabetha buried 5 Aug 1742, age 69 (my estimated date of birth, 1673)

My estimated marriage date is probably about 1693-1694 based on their age and birth of
children.

Their children are:
1. Johann Daniel, born abt 1695-1698
2. Philipss Peter, born 8 Aug 1700
3. Anna Margaretha, born 11 Feb 1705
4. Johann Ludwich, born 4 Jul 1705
5. Johann Condradt, born 19 Feb 1708
6. Anna Magdalena, born 26 Mar 1710
7. Johann Condradt, born 22 Aug 1713
((The two Condradts could indicate that the first one died before 1713))

Mathes Muschel and Anna Magdalena had a daughter, Anna Barbara, confirmed 1710,
age 15((estimated birth, 1695)).

From Hassloch Gerichtsbuch(Court Book)
Mathes Muschel from “Webenheimb Konigl. Schwedischer Jurisdiction” granted
citizenship 1 Dec 1712. ((My stab at translation is a weaver from kingdom of Swedish
Jurisdiction)).

Hassloch Church Book
Joh. Daniel Lindenschmidt married, 5 Sep 1719, Anna Barbara Muschel, daughter of
Mathes Muschel and Anna Magdalena.

Daniel and Anna Barbara had children:
1. Anna Magdalena, born 29 Oct 1720, baptized 3 Nov 1720
2. Joh. Friederich, born 24 Dec 1723, baptized 27 Dec 1723
3. Anna Margaretha, born 20 Sep 1727, baptized 23 Sep 1727
4. Joh. Valentin, born 27 Jun 1731, died 25 Jan 1733

Anna Babrara, wife of Daniel, died 25 Jan 1746, age 50 years

Daniel Lindenschmidt, widower, married 31 Aug 1746, Catharina Huber, daughter of
deceased Hans Michael Huber.

This is probably the John Daniel Lindenschmidt and wife, Catharina, who had the
following children baptized at Trinity Luthern and First Reformed Church, Lancaster
County, PA. They are:
1. Margaretha, born 23 Dec 1749
2. Joh. Jacob, born 16 Apr 1750
3. John George, born 20 Aug 1753
4. Catharina, born 29 Aug 1757

There is not indication, at least that I have found so far, that any of Daniel’s children by
his first wife immigrated to America.

AKB pg 1-2:
Hassloch Church Book
Anna Magdalena Lindenschmidt, daughter of Johannes and Elisabetha, married Johannes
Altenberger, son of Johannes Altenberger of Neerach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, on 27
Apr 1718.

Hassloch Court Book
Johannes Altenberger granted citizenship on 5 Jan 1729.

In America:
Johannes and Anna Magdalena Altenberger are sponsors in the First Reformed Church,
Lancaster, PA in 1740.

They are also listed:
Lancaster County Deed Book G, pg 400, dated 5 Dec 1745: Queen St, Lancaster; John
Aldenbarger and wife Maria Magdalena to Adam Kellen.

Lancaster County Deed Book D pg 223, dated 14 Jan 1755: 150 acres at Muddy Creek;
John Altenberger of Brecknock Twp, mortgage to Michael Bachman.

AKB pg 215-216 Hassloch Reformed Church Book

Johan Ludwig Lindenschmidt, married 2 Sep 1732, Maria Elisabetha, daughter of Jacob
and Maria Elisabetha Boll. Johan was born 4 Jul 1705, confirmed 1721. Wife was born
24 Dec 1711.

Hassloch Court Book:
Jacob Boll from Biel granted citizenship 27 Nov 1710

Children of Ludwig and Maria Elisabetha are:

1. Johanneta Magdalena, born 26 Sep 1733, baptized 28 Sep 1733
2. Barbara, born 23 Jun 1736
3. Johann Jost, born 6 Sep 1738, baptized 9 Sep 1738
4. Johann Jacob, born 1 May 1741
5. Anna Sara, born 23 Jul 1743
6. Anna Maria, born 20 Mar 1746

Tohicken Union Church, Bedminister Twp, Bucks Co., PA

7. Maria Magdalena, born 19 Nov 1749
Sponsors: George Henry Seibel and Mary Magdalena
8. Mary Elisabeth, baptized 26 Jul 1752 at Saucon
Sponsors: Balthaser Erbach and Mary Elizabeth
9. Eva Eliza, baptized 12 Oct 1754, confirmed 1770
Sponsors: Balthaser Erbach and Mary Elizabeth

John Jost Lindenschmidt confirmed Easter 1758

AKB pg 334-335 Hassloch Lutheran Church Book
George Henry Seibel and Mary Magdalens(nee Boll) immigrated on the Friendship, 20
Sep 1738 on the A list as George Syble, age 27.
They were married 12 Jan 1734.

Mary Magdalena is daughter of Jacob and Maria Elisabeth Boll, i.e., sister of Maria
Elisabeth(Boll) Lindenschmidt.

To sum up, at least 3 Lindenschmidts, John Daniel, John Ludwig, and their married sister,
Maria Magdalena (Lindenschmidt) Altenberger immigrated to America by 1748.

All are from Hassloch, Germany. The only Swiss connection that I can see is that of
Johannes Altenberger, husband of Anna Magdalena and that was before he became a
German citizen. I have not isolated any other Swiss connection with the name of
Lindenschmidt or Lindesmith other than family tradition. I will have to say that I may
have some bias here--I had always heard that two brothers come over from Germany!!

Again, as Mike pointed out, family traditions has “our Joseph” as being born in 1751,
however, the traditional age of confirmation in the Reformed Church is mid-to late teens,
which could place our Joseph’s actual birth date as early as 1739 to 1744 using the
confirmation date of 1758.

Comments will be appreciated.
