Oil City Derrick News:
September 19, 1891
"Death of John Lynd, at Siverlyville, from results of an accident received on July 9, when he was run over by a hand car on the W.N.Y. and P.R.R. and his back was broken."
His name was misspelled., however I knew this had to be him. With the help of volunteer researchers I found out who they were. I knew from the census record1900 Cranberry Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, Christina Lind was head of household, widowed, married 22 years. She immigrated from Sweden to America in 1881.
Her children were all born in the U.S. John A. Lind born May 1885 was age 15 on this census. Charles (Charley) was born September 1886 age 13. Harrison (Harry) was born May 1888, age 11 and Annie (Anna) born Aug. 1891, age 8. Christina’s children not listed on this census were Lulu Lind born March 1884 and Victor A. Lind 1887-1889. Victor died as a young child.
In a 1900 Census, I found Lulu, living with B.C. Simpson, age 57, his wife Ada age 46and their daughter Helen age 23. Lulu is listed as their servant age 16.
On a 1910 Census Lulu is listed as head of household age 26 with her brother John A. Lind 24 and Charles W. Lind 22. On this census it says parents were born in Sweden.
Children born in Venango County, Pennsylvania. Missing is Christina and Anna Lind.
I found Anna Lind on a 1910 census Oil City, Venango County Pennsylvania living at age 18 living with John Amsler age 27 and his wife Jennie Amsler age 22 and their two children Marian age 3 and Arthur age 2. Anna was married to Ernest Foley the following year, in 1911.
In a 1920 Census Harrison (Harry)C. Lind, age 30 was living with John Amsler age 37 and Jennie A. age 31 and their two children, Marian age 12 and Arthur age 11, and an elderly Arthur Amsler, age 71 who must have been John’s father.Harrison was a Lodger, Laborer in a machine shop.
I remember Aunt Betta talking about a woman who went back to Sweden and stayed there. I believe this was Christina Lind.
John Lind, Victor A. Lind and Ida S. Anderson are all buried in the same place. Grove Hill Cemetery, Venango County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as owner of the lot - Section 10, Lot 63. He bought this lot when his son Victor died. Then there was the mystery of who Ida S. Anderson was. I figured out by her birth date she must have been Christina’s sister, as I remember my mother saying that her mother’s mother’s last name was Anderson. With the help ofvolunteer researchers I found out who they were, and who their Sweden ancestors were.
Ida S. Anderson was born Ida Sophia Anderson 1854-1902. She immigrated here in 1887, with her illegitimate son Axel Konrad Nilsson.
John Lind was born Johan Magnus Alfred Lind 10/12/1850 in Djursdala, Kalmar, ian Smaland, Sweden. He immigrated 4/10/1873 from Sodra, Haga Und. Snokebo, Djursdala, Kalmar ian Smaland, Sweden. as an unmarried man age 22 from Port of Goteborg. Destination New York.
John Lind’s siblings born in Djursdala were:
Sven August Oscar Lind born 3/27/1852
Carl Adrian Lind born 3/3/1857
Ida Charlotte Lind born 11/28/1861
Otto Elof Lind born 9/23/1864. He immigrated to Oil City, Pennsylvania 5/11/1883 age 18.
Nicolas Emil Lind born 12/6/1867.
Fredrik Wilhelm Lind born 9/19/1870. He immigrated to Oil City, Pennsylvania 4/22/1887 age 17.
John’s parents were Sven Peter Lind, soldier born 2/6/1823 Frodinge, Sweden. #64 Soldiers Torp Sodra Hag.
On 12/31/1849 Sven married Stina Lotta Persdotter born 4/6/1825 Sodra Vi, Sweden.
John Lind’s wife, Christina Anderson was born
Stina Katarina Andersdotter 9/22/1847 Rumskulla, Kalmar, ian Smaland, Sweden.
She immigrated 9/2/1881 from Skarstad, Sodra, Vi, Kalmar, ian Smaland, Sweden.
Christina’s parents were Anders Isak Mansson born 1823, I Vimmerby Parish
and Anna Catharina Eriskdotter born 1821, Rumskulla. Ida S. Anderson was their daughter and Christina’s sister.
From all this we can see that John Lind came to Oil City, Pennslvania in 1873, then Christina came in 1881, Otto in 1883, Frederik in 1887 and Ida in 1887. John’s destination was New York, Otto and Frederik’s destination was Oil City, Pennsylvania where John was established.
