Frederick (1752-1825) and his brother John(1759-1805) from Sussex Co., Va were closely associated with the Pennington family. Frederick Lilley (yes , spelled with an "e" on this document)witnessed David Pennington's will account in 1784. His son, Samuel Lilly's will was witnessed by Richard Pennington on 6/5/1834. John Lilly, Sr. named Frederick as his brother, spelled without the "e" on yet another document. John Sr. and Rebecca Jennet Lilly's son William Lilly m. Rebecca Pair on 3/18/1818 and their son John M. Lilly m. 12/18/1845 to Nancy G. Pennington. I read his original will dated 2/22/1862, and he mentions his wife Nancy, but gives no names for his children.
Does anyone know who his children were? I am trying to place my gggrandad James Melvin Lilley b. 1857, and his brother Joseph W.(Uncle Tobe) Lilley, 1845/46, with no luck. They just showed up one day in the 1880 census in Gates Co., NC, leaving no previous footprints that I can find. Gates is only 2 counties south of Sussex. There they married and raised their families, and my grandfather John Lilley(1889-1970) moved back here to Sussex in 1925. Yes, I am Stuck in Sussex.
