Benjamin Lillard b. c 1701 Virginia
In Jacques Ephraim "Stout" Lillard's 1928 book LILLARD: A FAMILY OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA, Stout Lillard states that Benjamin Lillard (b. c. 1701 Virginia), son of John/Jean and Mildred (Jones) Lillard, m. 1724 Elizabeth Lightfoot, daughter of William Lightfoot.Among others, Benjamin and Elizabeth (Lightfoot) Lillard were the parents of Capt. John Lillard, b. 1737.
In David Hick Lillard's very carefully researched 1991 follow-up, LILLARD: A FAMILY OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA, 2nd Edition, Volume 1, p. 11, he states regarding Benjamin Lillard:
In David Hick Lillard's very carefully researched 1991 follow-up, LILLARD: A FAMILY OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA, 2nd Edition, Volume 1, p. 11, he states regarding Benjamin Lillard:"Stout Lillard traced the genealogy of the earliest American generations by stating that one of the two emigrants, John Lillard, married in 1700 to Mildred Jones, ....The only son of John Lillard and Mildred (Jones) Lillard was Benjamin Lillard who allegedly married Elizabeth Lightfoot, daughter of William Lightfoot ....
"Extensive research has not produced any reference in the extant records to a Benjamin Lillard who married Elizabeth Lightfoot. This lineage is apparently based entirely upon family traditions as related by Lillards of earlier generations. But these statements of tradition are not direct evidence because the declarants did not have personal knowledge of the events and relationships they described. The declarents were merely restating things which were told to them by earlier ancestors.18As a result, these statements may not represent the actual facts of early Lillard lineage in America and the lineage set forth above must be considered unproved."

"18.If Stout Lillard had access to letters, Bible records or other documentation proving these relationships and the early lineage of the family, it is unfortunate that he did not publish them, for none of these matters can be proved today.Apparently nothing constituting direct evidence or even strong circumstantial evidence was preserved."

John Lillard.
