The title of Colonel was bestowed on many a Southern gentlemen, regardless of their military rank at the time of service or after discharge.

Here are a couple of notes on Benjamin Lillard. Benjamin Lillard served in the French and Indian wars at Fort Duquesne, with the Virginia troops under George Washington. He also fought in Lord Dunmores war under Col. Wm Flemming and later at Fort Pitt under Cresap. In 1724 he married Elizabeth Lightfoot.
