There are more than one branch of the Liles/Lyles family, however the Virginia family seems to all be related including Ephraim. However, when you say "Where were they from?" it depends in which era. I will give you my somewhat educated guess. The origin of this Virginia Liles' was Vikings likely in southwestern Norway as the DNA tests I1N or I1SN (Super Norse). The surname, however, is of French origin and it is thought that these Vikings may have been part of the Viking occupation of Normandy (North Man Land) about 800 AD. William the Conqueror was also a Viking descendent Norman and his list of "knights" in his invasion of England in 1066 list two de Lisle's and one other whose son received parts of the Isle of Wight for his father's service with Willim just a few years later and then took the surname Lisle. It should be noted that surnames only came into use about 1000 AD. Also, spellings were not standard but phonetic even up until the early 19th century. The Isle of Wight was an active ship brokering port during the 17th century and the area where the first Liles/Lyles are recorded in the mid 1600's is now Isle of Wight Co. Va. From there the family moves west, some into Brunswick Co. Va and then in the early 1700's, they are noted in Anson Co NC as well as Fairfield and Chester Co SC. In the early 1800's the spread from those areas mostly through Alabama, Mississippi and Tennnesee many ending up in Texas by the latter part of the 1800's.
