At the time of Elizabeth Light(Lyte)s marriage name spellings were not constant. Her uncle Christopher`s will has three different spellings (Light-Lyte-Lyght)on the first page.A more certain way of recognition was the use of the family coat of arms.Hanging in Sulgrave Manor(the ancestral home of the Washington family are some marriage shields(in stained glass) which depict the two families being joined. In the case of Elizabeth the arms depicted are those of the Lyte family whose main family line held lands 100 miles to the south west. Her father Walter purchased Radway prior to his own marriage and in accordance with the pre and post nuptial agreements the property passed to the Washingtons on Walters death as Elizabeth was an only child.Elizabeths grandfather is buried at Horley in Oxfordshire together with her uncle Christopher.
