MARY LEFRY was born in Calhoun County, Illinois, to MR. and MRS. JOHN LEFRY, December 24, l82l.Both parents died while she was quite young, leaving her and her two brothers orphans.At the age of l8 she married MR. W.H. CARLAN in Illinois, there being two children from this marriage, WM. H. CARLAN, who is still living, and another son who died in infancy.MR. CARLAN died while the boy was young.In l856, MRS. CARLAN married MR. JOHN BEARD, of which union there were eight children.Of these, MRS. LYMAN LIGGETT, of Weldon, and MRS. DAVID L. SMITH, of Colony, Kansas, remain alive.
During the Civil War, MRS. BEARD served as a cook for the soldiers in Memphis, Tenn., and lost her two brothers in that war.MR. BEARD died in l868 and his wife moved to Leon the same year where she later married MR. PETER WHITE, whose name she bore until her death.MR. and MRS. WHITE moved to Lamoni, where two boys were born, NEWTON WHITE, now of Worland, Wyoming, and CHARLEY H. WHITE, of Decatur, Iowa.MR. and MRS. PETER WHITE moved to Weldon, Iowa, in its beginning days, about l886.MR. WHITE died in June, l892.
MRS. WHITE lived at different times in Leon and Decatur and then moved to Weldon two years ago to make her home with her daughter, MRS. LYMAN LIGGETT, and remained there until her passing away, October 2, l92l.Five children are living to mourn her death: MR. WM. H. CARLAN, of Des Moines; MRS. LYMAN LIGGETT, of Weldon; MRS. DAVID L. SMITH, of Colony, Kansas; MR. NEWTON WHITE, of Worland, Wyoming; MR. CHARLEY H. WHITE, of Decatur, all of whom were present at the funeral except MRS. DAVID L. SMITH.
Funeral services were held from the Christian Church on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lewis Smythe, after which the body was laid to rest in the Green Bay Cemetery.The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
