How William and Elizabeth traveled from Perth Amboy, New Jersey is unknown.I have the orginal letter written from William's brother, Joshua living in Perth Amboy, to him advising him how to travel to America.I had the orginal auction sale notice when William sold all his property on March 27, 1849.I gave this item to J.K. Liddle in Galax, Va.The family traveled to America on the Caleb Crimshaw and arrived May 5, 1849.Joshua wrote to William in the letter "It gave me great satisfaction to hear that you had wrote to Mr. Roper in Virginia and I was glad to hear that such great encouragement was given to you in your own branch of business being so flourishing in this country and a friend to assist. That is a great step for a stranger in a strange country."
William was preceded to America by two brothers, Joshua and John, and a sister, Mary, who had married George Fothergill.

Do not beleive Betty was a relative, but she did travel to the lead mines in Wythe County, Virginia and married a Samuel Stephens. (She was bonded on March 14, 1850 by William Liddle.)More Replies:
