Shirley,
I'm sorry I don't have anything to offer you on Mary Lewallen. It is interesting that your family followed the same path as Meshach's family--from Randolph Co. to Indiana and to Salem, Iowa. From what I've seen, it seems that Meshach's two sons, Henderson and Seth (and their families) were the only Lewallens (or Lewelling/Luelling) to go to Iowa. After Henderson left Iowa for the West Coast, his brother joined him there later. The common path of the two families does seem to be an awfully strong "coincidence" not to be an important clue.Perhaps you might check Quaker records of the period--William and Mary lived in the Back Creek Quaker community of Randolph County--Guilford College, which is near Greensboro, NC (near Asheboro) is a Quaker college and has a research room which carries a good bit of information. They might be able to help you by e-mail or snail mail.
Good luck-
Dennis
