25. ii. DAVID LEROY PERKINS, b. December 16, 1940, Croton, Licking Co., Ohio. Generation No. 5 15. GLADYS MAE5 FAWN (JULIA CORNELIA4 PERKINS, GEORGE WESLEY3, LYDIA2 LEVINGS, GEORGE R.1) was born July 17, 1914 in Croton, Licking Co., Ohio, and died May 30, 2000 in Heartland of Marysville, Ohio100. She married KENNETH EDWIN MARTIN101,102 June 08, 1935 in Delaware, Ohio. He was born Abt. 1912 in Paulding Co., Ohio, and died June 07, 1975 in Delaware Co., Ohio. Notes for GLADYS MAE FAWN: The Family Ghost- by D.R. Fawn (October 1999) As I grew up, Uncle "Bud" was talked about as the family ghost until 1988 when his remains and those of his fellow crewman were buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. The downing of his plane is chronicled in a book called "American Flyboy", written by George Wamsley (sp?) who was a pilot aboard one of the three C-47s comprising that flight. That chapter is referred to as "The Schwensen Incident". Like all of his brothers before, my dad enlisted in the military. As an Air Force family, we moved often and I rarely saw my relatives more than once every 2 years. I never knew my Uncle Bud as he was the third eldest child in a family of 11 and my dad was the youngest. My favorite Aunt Gladys was the oldest and closest sibling to Bud. She would always entertain me during our visits with the family ghost story. As a child, I couldn't wait to go visit Grandma and Aunt Gladys in Delaware, Ohio. I loved to sit with my Aunt Gladys and hear her tell me over and over again about my "Uncle Bud's ghost" which had appeared in a bedroom just down the hall in the house at 121 North Union Street in Delaware, Ohio. Aunt Gladys would recall that in the early morning, she was asleep in bed when she opened her eyes and saw Bud standing in her bedroom wearing his uniform. Mail was heavily censored and took months to arrive, so she assumed he had come home on leave. She would tell me that as she rose to greet him, he told her that he "could not stay because he was dead." He asked her to tell mom (my grandmother) that he loved her and everything would be alright. Gladys thought he was playing a joke until he showed her a "vision" (as she would describe it) of his plane crashing into the jungle. She would always put a good scare into me by describing how he faded away before her eyes. Aunt Gladys would tell how she rushed into her mother's bedroom and relayed the story. She said my grandma told her it was just a bad dream and to go back to bed. The Western Union telegram arrived 14 days later informing grandma that Bud was missing in action. As a kid, I would always want to sleep in my Aunt Gladys' bedroom when I visited hoping Uncle Bud's ghost would visit me too. As I grew older in a military family, I would still see Aunt Gladys every few years and would always ask her, even well into my late-20's, to tell me the story again. She always told it with such conviction that one couldn't help but wonder. I'm 43 at the time of this writing and to date the details of her story never wavered. Aunt Gladys would describe the "vision" in which she saw the plane crash into the jungle and would detail how the tail of the plane was sticking straight up out of the ground. Because I was no longer a child fascinated by a ghost story, I often questioned Gladys' details regarding the crash as her scenario seemed so unlikely. Having flown some myself, I knew that planes just don't crash that way. Other family members would sympathetically explain that Aunt Gladys never got over the loss of Bud for afterwards she became a "Spiritualist" and quite a devout believer in both the Almighty and the Hereafter. For 46 years, she insisted she knew what happened. As I grew older, I'd lovingly tease her a bit by humming the "Twilight Zone" theme and saying "BOO!" whenever I saw her. With age comes skepticism.... however, in 1988 she mailed me the first of several newspaper articles .... the first one published in "The Arizona Republic" newspaper. It relayed the tale of a Austrailian-employed geologist named Grant Malensek discovering the wreckage of that C-47 in the Owen Stanley Mountains about two miles from the runway at Wau while prospecting for gold. True to dear Aunt Gladys' 46-year-old story, the investigation concluded that the plane impacted at the base of a mountain during a particularly rainy period, i.e. the monsoon season. The impact of the crash had apparently triggered a mudslide which then buried the plane up to mid-fuselage..... with the story was a U.S. Army recovery team photo of the tail section of a C-47 sticking straight out of the ground... serial numbers clearly visible.... right before my eyes from an irrefutable source and true in every detail to the story I had heard since childhood! At the time I received this newspaper article, I was in my late 30's and licensed to practice emergency medicine by the State of Texas. Through my dad's older brother, I obtained the forensic report. The forensic exam showed that the base of my uncle's skull was shattered into many tiny fragments directly above where the first cervical vertebrae joins the cranium. I had seen this identical type of injury many times during volunteer shifts in the local emergency room.. often as a result of rapid deceleration auto accidents.. generally from high speed collisions with fixed objects. Known as a "comminuted basal skull fracture", it is rarely instantly fatal..... patients may live for many hours in a comatose state.... those that survive often tell stories of "near death experiences", tunnels of light, and out-of-body travel experiences. At the time of this writing, I've been a government-employed investigator for over 20 years and excel at cutting through the bull when it comes to a story. However, I just cannot seem to find any inconsistencies in Aunt Gladys' story and in this instance I am absolutely convinced that she related a tale of an event that actually happened to her. Clifford Jesse "Bud" Fawn now rests with some of his crewmembers in Arlington National Cemetery. Grandma Fawn, who used to state emphatically that she would not go to the Lord until Bud came home, went to see him the following month at the age of 94. AN INTERESTING FOLLOWUP TO THIS STORY: Subject: Clifford Fawn Date: Thu, 04 Nov 1999 13:25:10 -0700 From: GRANT MALENSEK <g.malensek@worldnet.att.net> To: drfawn@swbell.net I saw your request dated May 8, 1999 for info on your late uncle, "Bud" Fawn, of the 33rd TCS in New Guinea during WWII. My name is Grant Malensek and I was the leader of the group that found the wreck of the C-47 "Early Delivery" along with the remains of five men, including those of your uncle back in 1988. I now reside in the Denver, Colorado area and was wondering whatever happened with the men's remains. I have a couple of newspaper clippings concerning your uncle and the pilot, 1st Lt. Robert Schwenson. I understand from your e-mail that your grandmother died the day after the funeral. I'm glad that she was able to be there when her son finally returned. If you have any more info you can share I can be contacted at g.malensek@att.net. Best wishes, Grant Malensek Westminster, Colorado USA Subject: Re: [Fwd: 33rd TCS reunion - items attached] Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 09:52:04 -0700 From: GRANT MALENSEK <g.malensek@worldnet.att.net> To: drfawn@swbell.net Dear Don, Thank you for the material on your uncle. Truly a tragic story but with a heartwarming end. I will try to send some of my material that you may be interested in, particularly photos of the day we found the wreck. It was quite a bit more overgrown at that time than when the US Army CIL team went in a few months later. I have to admit it was a thrill for me too finding the wreck. I was a big WWII history nut as a kid who loved to build model planes and ships. Interestingly enough with respect to your Aunt Gladys, we found out later that the native tribesmen called the area a "ples masalai" (haunted place). Best regards, Grant Malensek g.malensek@att.net GLADYS MARTIN Gladys May Fawn Martin, 85, of Marysville died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Heartland of Marysville.
