Hi
I don't mean to sound stupid, but the name Lessard, is that French? The reason I asked that is one of my French-Canadian lines is from a man named Clement Lessert.I don't know where he comes from except that he may have been from Missouri at some time in his life. His first wife is Kaw, and after she dies he marries a mixed-blood French-Canadian/Osage.It is believed Clement died circa 1850s.Some publications that I have found him in, list his occupation as an Indian translator.
I've had trouble trying to determine the proper spelling of my relative's surname. Some of the other French names in my family go through a spelling change when the families move to Indian Territory (later Oklahoma); such as, Desnoyers (now DeNoya, pronounced as it looks) and Prudhomme (now Prudom, pronounced "prue-dumb").I thought maybe if I could find the original spelling of Lessert, then maybe I could find more out about the relative.
Are you aware of any spelling changes for Lessard?
Thanks!
