She was born about 1637 in St. Ursin, Bourges, Beny, France, and died Bef. 1681 in Québec City, QC.

Notes for Pierre Levasseur-dit-Lesperance:
A master woodworker, Pierre was born about 1627 in the parish of Saint-Leu-et-Saint-Gilles in Paris, the second of three children of Noel Levasseur-dit-Lesperance and Genevieve Gauche or Gauge. (The Dictionary of Canadian Biography gives her last name as "Grange.") His father was also a master woodworker and his mother is the daughter of Gilles Gauge & Jeanne Baudellet. Pierre is noted in Québec City as early as 11 August 1654. He is one of the founders of the Confrérie de Sainte-Anne at Notre-Dame de Québec.
In 1674, Pierre was working in the woodworkers' shop attached to the church in Beauport and was paid by the parochial council. In the 1681 census, this family can be found living in the haute ville of Québec City, by this time his wife Jeanne had died. Pierre died at Hôtel Dieu in Québec City. This was a hospital for the very sick or dying.
Pierre first settled on the island l'Île d'Orléans near Québec City where he worked in good faith and in the hope of being given concession of the said land, according to a notarized act. In 1663, he abandoned this way of life due to hardships he and his family encountered and they returned to Québec City. He was a carpenter and became a renowned sculptor in wood.
Pierre Levasseur-dit-Lesperance dit Lespérance died 12 March 1694 at the Hôtel--Dieu de Québec.
To him and his brother Jean (John) we owe the formation of the first union in Québec, "the brotherhood of carpenters of Madame St. Anne." The objective of brotherhoods was to regroup workers of a same trade. Many carpenters came to Québec in the early days of colonization to construct buildings; since they were members of brotherhoods in France, they established similar groupings in their new homeland.
Only one of Pierre's sons had children, Pierre II. His two other sons, Antoine (Anthony) and François (Francis) were soldiers.

Notes for Jeanne Chaverlange:
"Filles à Marier", page 88, Jeanne Chaverlange was born about 1637 in the parish of Saint-Ursin in Bourges, Beny, the daughter of Antoine Chaverlange and Marthe Guérin.
On 25 October 1655, Jeanne married Pierre Levasseur-dit-Lesperance dit Lespérance in Québec City. No marriage contract has been found for this couple. It is not known whether Jeanne could sign her name, but her husband could.
Jeanne Chaverlange died at Québec City some time before the 1681 census.

Pierre Levasseur-dit-Lesperance dit L'Espérance II was baptized on April 30, 1661. He married Madeleine Chappeau in Québec City on November 28, 1686. Together they had three children. Pierre II was widowed and remarried Anne Mesnage on March 18, 1696. Together they had 17 children and nearly half the Levasseur-dit-Lesperance family in North America owe their being to this couple.
Like his father, Pierre II was a carpenter. During the early years of Québec, Pierre II became a reputed sculptor. Other famous sculptors from the same family included Pierre-Noël (son of Pierre II and his first wife) Noël, Jean-Baptiste, Antoine and François-Noël, descendants of Pierre II. The Levasseur-dit-Lesperances frequently worked in collaboration with each another. In the account books of those years, one can read "paid to the Levasseur-dit-Lesperance for a tabernacle, a statue . . . " Noël Levasseur-dit-Lesperance's masterpiece is the Ursulines Chapel in Québec City which still remains today; the tabernacle and pulpit were carved in the early 1700's. Many other religious statues and church interiors in Québec City and l'Île d'Orléans were carved by the Levasseur-dit-Lesperance family and can be visited to this day.

Translator's Notes
1. Note taker
2. Mgr is the abbreviation reserved in French for Monseigneur, a title used by a bishop, which Guillaume Roger is not. Also used as an honorary title appended to the name of one regarded as gentleman by birth, position or education. Hence the use of "esquire" here.
3. Co-ownership, mariage en communauté de biens in French modern parlance, is said more specifically about the partnership of property mutually held between husband and wife. The effect of the co-ownership is, that husband and wife mutually own personal property and real estate acquisitions taking place during the marriage and all personal property debts contracted before or during the mariage. In the common law of Paris and some others, it is stipulated in the marriage contracts that a certain sum of the dowry amounts, will become part of the co-ownership. The husband is the master of the co-ownership. A widow can waive co-ownership or can continue it with her children. It is necessary to compile an inventory of it, if it is desired to dissolve a co-ownership.
4. It was the Paris common law which was used in New France, but at that period, there were several other common laws in France, including those of Berry, Bourbonnais, Britanny, Maine, Normandie, etc.
5. The douaire or jointure is a sum of money which the husband assigns to his wife on marrying her, to be enjoyed by her (usufruct), during her life, its ownership to devolve on her children. Usufruct of a certain portion of the property of the husband, which the wife must take when she survives. The douaire coutumier or customary jointure is half of all the property which the husband has on the day of his marriage, and which obtains when no predetermined jointure has been stipulated.
6. The donation mutuelle (mutual gift) or entre vifs (between living persons) is one which the future husband and wife make to the survivor, out of pure liberality and without constraint. Such gifts are subject to being recorded (insinuation) within four months, by the ordonnances. Acceptance is of the essence where such inter vivos gifts are involved; without this formality, they are null and void.
7. Probably abbreviation for "huissier" (bailiff).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of Pierre II's sons, father François-Ignace was a priest. He practiced his ministry in Lotbinière, Champlain, Cap-de-la-Madeleine and l'Ange-Gardien.

Another son, Denis-Joseph was responsible for most of the Levasseurs who are from the Trois Rivières area. Like his father and grandfather, Denis-Joseph was a carpenter. However, since business was not very good in Québec, he moved to Trois Rivières where his brother was a priest. He married Jeanne-Charlotte Couturier from Saint-François-du-Lac on February 4, 1738. Together they had nine children.

Denis-Joseph realizing that his trade as a carpenter was not as rewarding as in his first years in Trois- Rivières, encouraged his children to become farmers. One of his boys, Joseph settled in Bécancour; François went to Saint-Angèle de Laval across the St. Lawrence River from Trois Rivières and Jean-Baptiste settled in St. Grégoire. Denis-Joseph died in Trois Rivières on October 15, 1792.

Another of Pierre II's sons, François-Louis dit Borgia, was a major builder. Many individuals whose name is Borgia owe their being to François-Louis Levasseur. It was customary in those days to name a newborn for a prominent saint. That is how the Borgia name came about in Canada.
