John, We are blessed here in New Mexico with baptismal, marriage and burial records of the Catholic church going back to ca 1701 and marriage investigations back to 1695. Pierre/Peter 1 is shown with a daughter in one census, that daughter is called the "natural daughter" when she is baptized by her mother and surname was Gallegos. The daughter used her mother's surname when she married, but started using the Lesperance name when her children were baptized and Pierre and his wife were the godparents of the first child. I have seen several postings about Pierre on the Internet and have been able to locate records to either prove or disprove the different aspects - he was only married once, he had one legitimate daughter, and yes, Pierre/Pedro 2 was his nephew and he (2) finally was naturalized as a US citizen in 1891 (12 years after Pierre 1 died.) I have not yet found a will (but still looking), but will be following up with tax records and deeds. Pierre 1 did NOT get the land grant he requested, but was able to settle in the Valle de San Geronimo, now called Mineral Hills, just west of Las Vegas, NM. The land grant he requested was over the mountain, so to speak. (I was raised in that area and that is one reason I got so interested in the surname) I am doing an article on the L'Esperance of New Mexico for our Quarterly. If you want to reach me - info@nmgs.org is a good e-mail address. I am hoping to go back through the Genforum site about the beginnings of the L'Esperance family, but have not yet had time! Thank you for checking on me and with me - Notify Administrator about this message?
