I am trying to find more info on Peter (Pedro) L'Esperance who showed up in New Mexico Territory ca 1845/48 and is on the 1850 census. He was born in Canada and when he married his "wife," he states his parents were Pedro (Peter) Lesperanza and of Margarita Orinelos. (You have to remember that the priests in New Mexico at that time were use to Spanish, not French names. Actually, they weren't all that use to Spanish names, either <grin>) In the rest of the census records, the name is spelled as Lesperance or Esperance. Back to the family - Peter I has a daughter out of wedlock before he marries in 1853. In the 1860 census, he has a son, Peter II (Pedro) born ca 1840 in Canada, age 21. (I guess the son caught up with dad!) When Peter II marries, he marries his dad's step daughter. He gives his information as son of Jose (John) Esperanse and Maria (Mary)Ocenin, born in Canada. While many French Candians came to the New Mexico territory to trap and hunt between 1810 and 1840 - Peter/Pedro was a farmer and in 1860, gave his real estate value as $3200 and personal value as $2800 (a very rich man in a very poor territory). If anyone can help me or guide me, I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance. Notify Administrator about this message?
