I agree that it is quite confusing about the spelling of the name. However, as far as I can find out the oldest spelling in North America is "Lescalleet".
This is from a "John Lescalleet" who was a "Mariner" on the "Merry Jacks" and was "added to the passenger list by Bates from Mess list" which sales from England to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1749. This is part of "Cornwallis Ships to Halifax - 1749. This can be found at www.rootsweb.com.
I have found several variations of the name in England including (Lescalleet, Lescaillet, Lescaillette, Lescalliette, Lescallet, Lascallet, Lescaillait, Lequallet, Lescalez, Lescalliate, Lescailliet, Lescallyet, Lescollete, etc. I did find one couple in England who were from France. This was Nicolas Lescaillet born about 1574 in France. His wife is Jacqueline Lescaillet. They were married about 1598 in London. It is very dificult making sense of the English records and trying to put together a chart.
In France I have found "Lescalet" about 1657.
Finally,it appears that the family settled originally in the Frederick County area of Maryland. Although one member "George Lescalleet" moved from Maryland to Ohio in the 1800s. Check with Curt Lescalleet for a definitive breakdown on that line. He has done a great deal of research there.
My recommendation would be start where you are and work backward. Parents, Grandparents, Great-grandparents, etc. Thats what I have done. Check census records, etc.
