Am doing research on the African/American Leonard families of Coosa County Ala.We found 8 families on the 1870 census that came from Ga. Of course, I was wondering which county in Ga.Some were listed as farmers and some had modest finances meaning they were not all slaves, but free men. My husband is a descendant of Ransom Leonard. We were wondering about the relationship of Ransom to Samuel Alexander listed as "A", Joseph, Manda, J.W.(Not sure what the initials stand for), John, Thomas, Edward, Jack and William Leonard.Joseph was listed at 48 yrs of age, Manda at 48, Ransom at 40, J.W. at 38, John at 35, A at 35, Thomas at 34, Edward at 28, Jack at 24 and William at 21 yrs of age in 1870.Do you have any information as to where they came from?We believe that John B. Lennard Sr. (white)married Mary (Wood)in Va. then went to Wilkes Co. Ga where he died in 1837.We have another John B. Lennard and Martha (Smith)(perhaps his son) born in 1832 in Washington Ga and died in 1908 in Ala. Possibly a mixed marriage. Did any one of your Leonards take these men to Ga from S.C. meaning they were brought into S.C. from another country?Oral history says they were brought from the Carribean Islands and given the "Leonard" name. We still need proof. Still trying to find blood relationship amoung these men if any. We believe that Joseph was the father of Edward, Jack & William because of their ages and he did have children by these names. If you could add any information about the S.C. to Ga connection, we would appreciate it.Please email me directly. \Pat [email protected]
