The Bridgewater branch of the Leonard family was started by Solomon Leonard (born abt. 1610), who was one of the founders of Duxbury, MA (see Jonas Windsor's History of Duxbury) and then of Bridgewater, MA. The Bridgewater line is distinct (for the most part) from the Taunton, MA line, which was started a bit later in the 1600's by James, Thomas, and Henry Leonard, who came to Lynn and Braintree, MA in about 1645-1655 to start an ironworks there. My (and, apparently your) actual Bridgewater line is: (1) Solomon (m. Sarah Chandler); (2) NOT Jacob but JOHN (m.Sarah); (3) Joseph (m. Martha Orcutt); (4) Joseph (m. Mary Packard). From there, my line is David (m. Mary Hall). I have in my family tree a Joseph (son of Joseph-4), but have no info. re him. I would be interested in what you have as to that Joseph). You can respond privately to: phelps@alumni.princeton.edu if you like. The best starting place for your further research re the Leonards is Vol. 15 of the Mayflower Soc. book on James Chilton. Other good sources are Nahum Mitchell's History of Early Bridgewater; Fanny Leonard Koster's book on the Leonards; Caroline Leonard Goodenough's book on the Leonards; and Manning Leonard's book on the Leonards. All of the foregoing are available in the NEHGS library (which I think is fantastic). I look forward to hearing back from you. Since Solomon was granted land in Duxbury in 1638 in consideration for his "services" to the Plymouth Colony and since the period of servitude usually was 7 years, it is logical to conjecture that he came over during about 1629-1631. Unfortunately, the old ship passenger lists are far from complete. My theory (which I still am researching) is that Solomon came over in about 1630, possibly on the ship Handmaid, which arrived in Plymouth in Oct. 1630 with about 60 passengers.I would be interested in anything you find. Best regards, Mike Phelps.
