John Lent married Barbara Croft in the area of Westchester County, New York about 1775 and, before 1800, moved to what is today Bradford County, Pennsylvania. While family "tradition" says that his wife, Barbara, was the daughter of John Croft and allegedly the daughter of the Duke of Baden, that is wishful thinking. I believe that Barbara Croft was actually Anna Barbara Krafft, daughter of Johan Krafft of Rhinebeck, below. John Croft (or his original German name of Johan/Johannes Krafft or Kraft) lived in the Hudson Valley of New York, specifically Dutchess (near Rhinebeck) and Westchester (near Peekskill and/or Yorktown) Counties in the mid 1700s. In a monograph entitled, “Marriage Records of the Four Reformed Congregations of Old Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York 1731-1899”, transcribed and indexed from the original church records in Dutch/German by Arthur C. M. Kelly in 1971, item 2161 states that, on February 21, 1758, Johannes Krafft, a young man born in High Germany and living in Rhinebeck, married Cattarina Zipperly, a young woman born and living in Rhinebeck. In another monograph entitled, “Baptismal Record of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Rhinebeck, New York (called Stone Church) 1733-1899” (also transcribed and indexed from the original church records in Dutch/German by Arthur C. M. Kelly), Johannes Krafft and his wife Barbara, had the following children: Name Birth Date Sponsors 1) Georg May 7, 1761 Jerg Laun, Susanna Schuhmachern 2) Anna Maria Oct 9, 1763 Jacob Simon and wife Anna Maria 3) Friderich Aug 10, 1765 Johannes Schmidt and wife Maria 4) Anna Feb 5, 1768 Jerg Ziperle and Anna Maria 5) Anna Barbara Nov 22, 1769 Christian Francklin and Maria Barbara 6) Rebecca Aug 12, 1772 David Fadenburg and Rebecca 7) Sarah July 21, 1776 Bastian Faieder and wife Orschela [sic--probably Ursula] Zipperley researchers who have submitted information to the Latter Day Saints for inclusion in their on-line database show Barbara Catharina as born ca. 1736-1738 to Johan Friederick and Maria Catharina (Wegeli) Zipperley. Johan Friederick, in turn, was the son of Johan Barent and Anna Maria (Reichert) Zipperley, who were among the Palatinate Immigrants of 1709. With Johannes Krafft and Barbara Catharina Zipperley marrying in February 1758, one would expect to see a first child born nine to 18 months later (i.e., Nov. 1758 to August 1759), and such a birth would not be inconsistent with a 24 to 36 month spacing before Georg (b. May 1761, so that any older sib would likely have been born between May 1758 and May 1759). Combining these, we would expect to see a first child between November 1758 and May 1759, but apparently there is no such baptismal record. I believe that this Krafft family of Rhinebeck is the same as the John Croft family connected (by tradition) to the Lent and Vought families of Westchester County, NY. Certain apparent "discrepancies" can be readily reconciled and/or explained. First, I believe that there was a daughter Catharine born ca. November 1758, who would grow up to marry Henry Lent in 1776. There is room for her, and she would be expected, and the name Catharina has precedent in this family; only a baptismal record is lacking (and might have been overlooked). Second, the son Georg, being born to German and/or German-ancestry parents, would almost certainly have had a second name and I believe he was either Georg Jacob or Jacob Georg (and Jacob in German became the equivalent James in English), and, at age 23, would marry Hester/Esther Vought in 1784. The daughter Anna Maria, born in 1763, would become simply Mary (“Polly”) in English and would marry Godfrey Vought in 1780 at age 16 or 17. I believe the son Friderich was actually Johan Friderich (in German tradition, named for his maternal grandfather, Johan Friderich Zippereley and for his father, Johannes Krafft), and would be known in English as John. The Anna Barbara born in 1769 would be known simply as Barbara and would marry John Lent. The other daughters, Anna (1768), Rebecca (1772), and Sarah (1776) had been hitherto unknown. Anna might have been Anna Catherine and might have married Christian Bauer (son of Jost?) about 1785. Nothing further is known about the others at this time. In addition, there is at least one land record concerning Johannes Krafft. At http://home.rochester.rr.com/crayton/genealogy/9C57.html, I found information from a Brosius researcher, and I quote, “In June 1998, at the County Clerks Office of Dutchess County, Poughkeepsie, NY was found the following in the deed index: 1763; Grantee - Peter PROTIUS (also BROLIUS) & ano; Grantor - Samuel HENER; liber 4, page 234. This appears to be the purchase for the sum of 330 pounds, an "Indenture of Lease" from "Samuel HENER of Rhinebeck Prec; in Dutchess County Black-Smith". It is given to Johannis KROFT & Peter BROSIUS and is witnessed by Henrich DEDER & Migael ZIPERRON. It is dated 26 May 1762.” The following table sets forth the baptismal records from the Reformed Church of Rhinebeck in which Johannes Krafft was a sponsor. Child Born/Baptized Parents Frederick Bo: 7-27-1761Ba: 8-9-1761 Pieter Brosuis & Christina Zippully The following table sets forth the baptismal records from St. Peter’s Lutheran (“Stone Church”) in Rhinebeck in which Johannes Krafft was a sponsor. Child Born/Baptized Parents George Bo: 8-29-1747Ba: 9-6-1747 Benjamin Fredenburg & Catharina Anna Bo: 8-31-1750Ba: 9-5-1750 Jacob Laun & Anna Margaretha Johannes Bo: 10-26-1766 Johannes Zipperlin & Rebecca Jonas Bo: 3-16-1768 Jacob Simon & Anna Maria Anna Bo: 6-28-1772 Johannes Hener & Margaretha Johannes Bo: 4-18-1774 Christian Francklin & Maria Barbara Johannes Bo: 11-22-1786Ba: 12-28-1786 Christian Bauer & Catharina Kraft There are other people surnamed Kraft in the records as well, and I believe Johan had the following siblings: PARENTS KRAFFT (likely born in Germany, married in Germany and had children in Germany; might have emigrated but might have died in Germany). Children: (1) Catharina, b. ca. 1722 (plus or minus 2) in Germany, m. 1740 Benjamin van Vreedenburg in Rhinebeck and lived in Dutchess County; (2) Johannes, b. ca. 1729 (plus or minus 5) in Germany, m. 1758 Barbara Catharina Zipperle in Rhinebeck and lived (initially) in Dutchess County; (3) Maria Barbara, b. ca. 1730 (plus or minus 4), probably in Germany, m. before 1754 Jacob Schmid and lived in Dutchess County; (4) Michael, b. ca. 1732 (plus or minus 8), probably in Germany; and (5) Jacob, b. ca. 1735 (plus or minus 2), in Germany.
