I just got the following note today about the Lents from the Naper Settlement Library (Naperville, IL). The Naperville Cemetery reading, done in the early 1950's, has Norman Lent, 26 June 1826 - 22 Aug 1898 and Caroline Matilda Lent, 27 July 1829 - 19 June 1907, together in Section 2. There is also a stone in the same section for "Our Darling Willie", son of N. M. Lent (the initials are hard to read in this copy -we can check them for you at some point), aged 4 years 3 months 12 days. No date on it, but it is next to one from 1849. (Others nearby are 1860's through 1880's). There is a biographical section on the Lent's in the 1882 county history, and other references. Norman Lent was a blacksmith born in Bradford County, PA, 17 June 1826, son of Egbert and Polly (Stocking)Lent. Egbert was a carpenter & wagon-maker, born in Peekskill, NY, died circa 1847. Polly was born in Binghamton, NY, still alive in 1882 and living with a daughter in Iowa, age 80. They had 11 children, 10 still alive in 1882. Norman moved at age 13 with parents to Onondaga Co, NY and was apprenticed as a blacksmith at 19 for 4 years, then 2 years as a journeyman. Came to IL in 1851, worked a year in St. Charles (northwest of Naperville maybe 15 miles), came to Naperville 2 March 1852 where he worked as a journeyman for 3 years. Went into partnership with Willard & Loomis for a year, then withdrew and went into business on his own. Married on 4 July 1848, Miss Caroline M. Richmond, a native of Vernon, Oneida Co, NY. They had 11 children, 7 still living in 1882. Elgin E., Edwin W., and George W. were all blacksmithing in Correctionville, Woodbury Co, IA, and Emma J. is wife of Mr. Thompson, a farmer of Cherokee, IA. Lillian, Walter and Minnie were "at home." "Mr. Lent is a Republican." The family does not appear in the 1913 county history. Notify Administrator about this message?
